Let's talk, from a secular perspective, about the moral and communal dimensions of the Coronavirus crisis. What is a good life, or a healthy community, when our culture and society have been so disrupted? Where do we find hope? What do we do with our fear? How do we cope healthily with all this solitude? And what do a bunch of workaholics do with themselves when productivity seems next to impossible, and besides, many of our prized pursuits seem relatively pointless or futile at the moment?
For those of us who don't happen to be traditionally religious, there are no prescribed or perfect answers to any of these questions. But while faith and certainty can be positive qualities, there are also profound strengths and ethical resources in our ability to tolerate ambiguity. If uncertainty is all we have right now, let's embrace that - and, (virtually!) each other.
